A lot of people talk excitedly about Clarke going to Polis, but that’s not how I imagine it. Clarke goes back to Mount Weather. She stays there alone, for weeks. She digs a single grave for every single person. She buries them. First the children, because she can’t bear to see them decay. Then the rest. This is her penance.
As she lays Maya down, separate from the rest, the final grave dug. She lays her body, wrapped in an environmental suit, into the earth. She looks down, the lifeless face seen through the visor, and she wipes a single tear. “May we meet again,” she says before covering the body with dirt.
She looks across the sea of graves, each dug by her, each buried, each face logged to memory. She drops the shovel and walks away. She never looks back at the mountain that took so much from her, only forward, it’s the only way she can survive.
