50 Girlcrushes of 2013: Shelley Conn
First, let’s take a moment to salute Shelley Conn for playing gay ladies time and again and we should all pitch in and buy her a cake. Although, I thimk a lot of you would agree that getting to make out with Anna Torv is reward enough. Fair point. Her last turn as a gay lady was in this Spring’s comedy Heading Out where she played a woman flirting shamelessly (and hilariously) with Sue Perkins while being in a relationship with Anna Skellern. No, really, how can one actress be this lucky when playing gay ladies? I will admit, however, it was rewatching Nina’s Heavenly Delights that made me fall back in love with her face. Making out with Laura Fraser (another lady we should send a cake to) after all these years is still as delightful as ever. But, seriously, who could really resist this face? It is impossible.

50 Girlcrushes of 2013: Sarah Shahi
During my yearly re-watch of the criminally underrated and unjustly cancelled Life (which is now available on Hulu … first season is a gem), I found myself longing for Sarah Shahi to return to material that was just a little bit gritter, a little bit rougher and something that would showcase the side of her that we didn’t get to see on her USA dramedy Fairly Legal. Although, if she went back to kissing ladies again like her name was still Carmen de la Pica Morales, I wouldn’t have minded that either. As if in an answer to my prayers, the fangirl gods decided to give Sarah Shahi the role of Shaw on CBS’s Person of Interest, someone who would make Dani Reese want to run for the hills if she ever went toe to toe with her. Shaw is someone that would make most run for the hills. Well, except maybe Root, but more on that later. As Shaw, Shahi is formidable and the kind of person who would dig a bullet out of her own stomach and not so much as bat an eye. You want Shaw on your side because most who dare cross her do not live too long to regret it. What makes Shahi’s performance so great is that I know the woman is one big goofball off-camera, Exhibit A and Exhibit B, and not an ounce of that sweet creature is seen on screen. Plus, I always have a soft spot for people who have similar pop culture interests. She loves Dolly Parton. I mean, how could I not love that?

50 Girlcrushes of 2013: Emily Bett Rickards
What happens when character who was supposed to be a minor featured player develops over a season into the most likeable female lead so much so that people on Tumblr reblog gifset featuring this character even though they don’t watch the show? First of all, WHOOPS … sucks for you if you were supposed to be the female lead of said show. And secondly, your name is probably Emily Bett Rickards and your charming character, Felicity Smoak, has ruined my life. Congratulations. Now in its second season, Arrow has developed into a thoroughly enjoyable show and even more enjoyable is the relationship that has developed between Oliver Queen and his gal Friday (don’t call her that though)/hacking genius. Felicity says the wrong thing at the wrong time and usually speaks before she thinks and we love her all the more for it. Over the first season, she has became a trusted ally and friend and Oliver’s superhero mission would be lost with her. Oliver sometimes wears the burden of his life a little too heavily and Felicity reminds him that he deserves more and he deserves better. Now, I would love it if Oliver finally starts to believe that and maybe decides to make a life with Felicity. My shipper heart … don’t give up the ship, indeed.

«Jim [Caviezel] came over to me, and we had shot the scenes a couple of times already, and he came over to me and said “I want to try something. Just go with me.” And I was like “Yeah,” because I love to work like that. Don’t even tell me. Just do it. And deep down I think I knew it was going to be a kiss. Actually the dialogue read as such. It read just like we played it out, but it almost needed that kiss. So when he did it, it was perfect. And because I didn’t know it was coming, Carter’s expression was priceless. Because when you’re in the moment and you’re with your best friend, and you’re at a very vulnerable point in your life… maybe you call your best friend over and he’s never crossed that line. And then because you’re in a vulnerable place it just kind of happens and you’re stuck inside “Oh my god, what just happened? I just kissed my best friend.” Awkward. But you know, the walls were closing in on them. And humans do honest things when their life is in danger.» Taraji P. Henson(x)
